They might as well have done so Quinlad. If we expect people to be responsible for getting themselves into debt then why don't we also make them responsible for being single parents? Or unemployed? Why help these people who have gotten themselves into trouble?
Under Labour debt has increased, personal and government. Why? Look at previous Labour governments, it is history repeating itself.
As for JK Rowling, she should have given the money to charity, not a political party.

"If we expect people to be responsible for getting themselves into debt then why don't we also make them responsible for being single parents?"
Because we believe in giving children a start in life.
"Or unemployed?"
Not everyone is unemployed through any fault of their own. The more vulnerable members of society find that employers don't want them because they're too old, or lacking in social skills or of low intelligence. Any benefits system worth its salt makes sure that these people don't slip through the net.
