my sisters grandson will not do the #2 in the potty. always goes in his pants. he is 4 years old and hides to use the bathroom. his stools seem fine. and according to her if she should attempts to physically make him go the moment she sees him hiding as he normally does to use the bathroom in his pants, he gets hysterical. what in the world is going on?

My daughter did this and it took a few months for her to go on the toilet. I would ignore it for now and don't tell the child off or try and force him to use the potty. It will only make it a bigger issue and frighten him. This is much more common than you think and he will grow out of it. My daughter did it all the time and I did tell her off at first but it made no difference. A few months later she actually told me she needed to poo and I was really busy at the time and just told her to go to the toilet herself. To my amazement because I left her to it she did! She got lots of praise and never did it in her pants again!
He will get over this, not many 18yr olds still poo in their pants do they!?
my son had the same problem and done this till he was6. i got advice from the health visitor and she came up with some suggestions that really worked. firstly she asked if he had ever been constipated because when kids are constipated they try to force it out and obviously it hurts, she said that sometimes kids then get it in their heads that its going to hurt everytime therefore they put off going to the toilet so much that they end up soiling themselves. another suggestion i had was to make a game out of it{ as silly as it sounds} called beat mr poo! basically she said to tell them that when he feels like he needs to go he has got to make it into a race to get to the winning line {the toilet} before mr poo........he will need lots of cheering on and incouragement. for this and also a little treat if he wins. if he doesnt win then give him a star to put on a chart for trying anyway. give him a goal of 10 stars to get a bigger treat as a insentive. i know it sounds daft but it worked with me......good luck!
