I've got a Dell Inspiron laptop and now I want to get wireless internet. What do I need to buy to make this happen, and is it best to go through Dell or can I get it from anywhere? And how much should it all cost?

Which Inspiron do you have?  I have the Inspiron 9100 and it has a built in WiFi card.

You can either purchase a mini-PCI WiFi card that goes inside the laptop or you can get either a WiFi PCMCIA card or one that plugs into a USB port.  The first two choices would be better.

Have you looked at the Dell website and looked at prices?

I'm sorry to sound like a heathen, but I don't really understand that.

I've got an Inspiron 5160 that doesn't have an inbuilt wi-fi card, apparently.

Okay, so you need either a PCMCIA card (credit card shape that slots into the side of the laptop) or the USB WiFi plug in type.  If you have a look at dell.co.uk or a good computer online shop then you should be able to find them.
