how much topsoil?

i have just taken up the paving in the back garden i want to put turf down. is 4/5 inch of topsoil ok for turf to grow?

There are two answers to this ambiguous question.

Four fifths of an inch would probably lead to the turf struggling to get a hold.

On the other hand four to five inches would be suitable IMO, although it could depend on the state of the subsoil.

dont have subsoil it all rubble goes down about two meters

i mean 4 to 5 inchs of soil sorry
If it is pure rubble, and you put your 4/5" of soil on top you will have to repeat the process in fairly short order. You need to lay a fibrous membrane which will stop the soil leaching down through the rubble..You will find it in most Builders Merchants and decent Gardeners stores.
