What is my SMTP server??

I just bought a website and I'm trying to set up the POP3 account. I was wondering what is a SMTP server? My connection is DSL and I want to use outlook to get the mails. It says that the SMPT is the server used for my out going mail? I don't know what to put in the box and it won't let me advance until I fill it in. I have no idea any one know or could shed light on this? Many thanks in advance - Mintox

SMTP (simple mail transport protocol) is the way you deliver messages from your computer to your isp. The address you'll need here, you have to get from your ISP. sometimes it'll be the same as the address for your incoming server, sometimes it won't. If you are only ever going to receive emails and never send then you could theoretically enter a false address (for example, just use the same as the incoming server) and it will let you progress but will generate an error if you do try to send a message.

By buying a website I presume you mean you have just contracted a new ISP. A smpt server is a service where you can send your mail to (through outlook express or whatever program you wisg to use) and they send it to whoever it is addressed to. A pop3 server is a service which collects your mail and stores it until you 'collect' it via outlook express. Usually the two are part and parcel of your ISP (internet service provider) who should have provided you with the appropriate info.

HI thanks the only info i got was Incoming mail server address (POP3): mail.***.com Outgoing mail server address: Your dial up provider's SMTP server. ???? I try what mopoke suggested and send some mail to myself and see what happens. Im not really concerned about sending mail yet i just think it look a bit more profession if i have a .com mail rather than a @freewebmail.com (or alike) ill write to them and ask just thougth it would be something that they provided as wild said and i just wanted to make sure i wasnt doing anything stupid like - just put your name in etc. ill let you know how i get on!

The information is in your DialUp Network (D.U.N.) settings which You can access through control panel in Windows. They want the smtp address of your default ISP. Hope this is helpful and not more confusion.

got it working in the end. its smtp.(ISP Name).com :D
