This could get tough. Change ringing and lots of cold solving. Nice and meaty at first glance

I suspect that editorial 'leniency' will hinge on whether they consider the 9-letter word has a t----- as well as being a t-----. If so, then all 3 choices should be allowed, if not then the strict wording of the quotation (with a t---) will be upheld. Either way, the quotation's answer has to be acceptable.
Thanks Robinruth. I knew the letter. I shouldn't have needed help!
How come no-one has asked about 10d "They offer a home?". Admitted every letter is checked - twice - so I don't need it, but it is niggling at me. The only possibility I have come up with (vowel, consonant,vowel, consonant,vowel) doesn't jibe with the first two words of the definition, even in its Shakespearean sense. I don't want the answer, just to know whether anyone has a fully satisfactory answer.
'They' = a
'offer' = bode
I'm with the quotation camp for the required answer. Initially I was dubious as there was no indication that a quotation was required but perhaps the shaded bells provide the necessary punctuation...

Roll on 4 o'clock.

Thanks cruciverbali - I am starting to note down all these rather obscure (actually entirely and utterly obscure) terms such as 'a' for 'they'. The Listener extends your vocabulary into places that other crosswords do not go.
No need to jot them down they're all in Bradford's.
Bradford's? I thought that was for train timetables?
Oops - that's Bradshaw's, isn't it. So what is Bradford's?

What a struggle! I'd given up after getting about 2/3 last week. Took a brief look this afternoon before starting on 4053 and to my surprise the rest slotted in. Went with the ODQ too. I hope the postal strike won't make me late! Now on to 4053...
Thanks Mysterons - Blimey, another crossword solving book to buy. On the Xmas list it goes!
