Well one is a thing you put letters in and the other is a spelling mistake.

I didn't word that properly! I meant, Why do some people pronounce it 'O'nvelope, and some, 'E'nvelope?
Sorry, I wasn't being pedantic I thought this was maybe a question from a non english speaker! and anyway isn't an "O'nvelope" a thing for letters and an "en'vel'ope" is to smother, or cover completely??
It's an 'eether' 'eyether' situation. Probably a class thing; first class stamp; onvelope 2nd class stamp ; envelope. I always wondered what a 'pet talk' was. (Dog wouln't say) I eventually found out it's a 'pep talk'. How would you pronounce this one; 'nougat'?
Noogaa!
'nugget'
A bit like the difference between an antelope and an ontelope :-) Sorry, just a bit of festive fun. By the way, which do you suppose has more stripes, a zebra or a zeebra?
It's originally a french word, with the french pronouncing it woth the "O". Over time, though, it's become anglisised (excuse the spelling), and people now tend to pronounce it as it is spelt: with an "E".
Following on from 5029's comments then that must be what french letters were stored in then!
