Headlights in France

Further to my earlier question, the car is a Mercedes W210 E300 turbodiesel with Xenon headlights. On these cars there is a moulded perspex lens in front of the headlamp, otherwise one could use black adhesive tape in the appropriate places. It seems silly to have to go to a Mercedes agent to have these lights adjusted for continental driving as they will then be wrong for this side of the channel. I had hoped to find a simple adjustment that could be done whilst waiting to board the ferry. Irrespective of whether its really necessary, does anyone know how to do it?

Not sure if this happens on a Merc, but if you look at the lens there should be a wedge/pie slice  shaped bit to the lens, about 6" long and 1" tapering to 3" (very rough dimensions). This is the bit the dips the beam, so this is the bit you need to cover. Normal tape is not good enough, as the light still shows through, but I think you can get a kit from Halfords (or similar) that has silvered plastic that you cut out and stick on. You can pre cut this and then stick it on on the ferry. Have a nice trip.

Halfords or any car spares shop will be able to sell you stick-on Freznel lenses which shift the dip beam from left to right.  The main beam is not affected 'cos you're not supposed to use it when traffic is in front of you.
