Help xp pro Media player!!!

When I play songs on my media player it sounds weird like its being flushed down the pan it even happens when ive got no other programs runing so if any one has any info please help me.

XP ships with media player 7.1 and there is a new Microsoft MediaPlayer available (Version 9) which you can download and try. Have you tried other media players since I don't think you can easily un-install then re-install the Windows one. There are plenty available including RealPlayer and WinAmp. If you have a general sound fault (try playing the preview sounds from the sounds and multimedia icon in control panel) you may have a faulty sound card.
I encountered a similar problem when using my motherboard's on-board sound (AC97). It was solved by installing the latest drivers (VIA 3-in-1) and also changing the setting for audio in the BIOS.
