Setting up iPhone

Im not the most technically minded but Im not useless either, but Im tearing my hair out!

Im trying to set up my iphone (3GS), and have been following the little instruction booklet provided by Orange. The problem Im having is that when I download itunes, my laptop tells me it needs a newer version - very confusing seeing as Ive downloaded the most recent one off the Apple website!

Ive phoned Orange to activate my sim card, they said it may take 2 hours, but in the meantime, the iphone only shows ability to make emergency calls.

Is there anything else I can do? Or just a waiting game now?? TIA

But they are so addictive when you get them going and I haven't even got any music on mine - just loads of stupid (and free) games.
