We only have to turn them off because if everyone was on their phone through the flight 1. people would get angry and have air rage, 2. they wouldn't be paying attention if the cabin crew needed to give them safety instructions).
I don't think phones are a cause. Cars maybe, and all the other air pollution. But not phones.
PS - I dropped geography before GCSE so really, I have NO idea!!! :-p
Our weather is not any worse than 10 or 20 years ago ! It just gets reported more in the media. As the media love to play on our fears and "global warming" and "severe climate changes" play right into our hands or minds as is more appropriate.

There are a number of climate indicators being monitorred by Defra the 2003 report can be seen here:
Top of the list:
The 10-year period 1993-2002 was the warmest on record in central England, 0.7 ?C above the 1961-1990 mean;
The average number of hot days (at or over 20 ?C) in 1993-2002 in central England was 7.4, over twice the long-term average;
I've never heard it seriously suggested that mobile phones signals contribute. Personally I doubt it but I'd not dismiss the possibility out of hand.
