Transferring Number to new car.

I am looking into part exchanging my car. Is it possible to transfer my reg no to my new car or must I first get the number on a retention (£105) then later transfer it to my new car(£80) later once all the Reg docs + tax disc etc are correct. I have looked at the V317 and the notes and it does not appear to offer a way to do the transfer at the same time as buying. Any experts in this area?

I always get it on retention before selling my older car as ownership of the registration number goes to the new owner of the car.

Most garages will let you change the reg number later but they could change their minds or you could have problems if it is quickly sold on.

Basically when you buy the "new" car you send off the V5 and the notification of change of registration number. it costs £80. If you put it on retention you end up paying twice as much.

Yes rnchug I understand but there is no way to do that without having to trust the dealer.

i have done this a few times and it was quite straightforward, the only real issue i had was as i was part exchanging the dealer was hassling me to get the donor car back on its original plate a.s.a.p. so they could sell it on. It only ever took a few days but we all know what salesman are like.. Unless its a brand new ungregistered vehicle (then im not 100%) it will have to go on retention at £105. Everytime i have done it ,its usually takes less than 5 days ...You only pay once the cost covers transfering onto the new vehicle including a new tax disc for which they send you an envelope to return the old one assuming there is one on the vehicle. You could speed the process up by going to your local DVLA office and get it done while you wait

Great Chas, so just to clarify, the retention cost of £105 actually covers the cost of putting it on the vehicle that it will finally end up on (which would normallu cost £80), ie anytime within the period covered by the retention. Right?

yep, once the £105 is paid it includes the transfer fee, if kept on retention its £25.00 per year until such time its allocated to a vehicle.

We have a cherished (or private) plate. Every time we change our car we have to pay £85 for the privilege of swapping the registered plate to our own plate. The garage issues a retention certificate (£105) until we can change the plate. If my memory serves me right, our last car had to keep its own registration for some reason for a couple of months, we then approached the garage to ask for our own registration number to be put on the new car. It's a lot of messing about getting log books for each car to be changed over again.

its easier than you think, its also done in such a way you you are not left without a current tax disc displayed.
In hindsight and im guilty of it you should really be thinking about the number plate well before part exchanging,otherwise it slows the deal up while you are piddling around changing the reg numbers.If you are like me though its a spur of the moment thing see a car buy it ! worry about the plates later...really annoys the salesman.

I go into the local DVLA.it takes 10 minutes and you come out with a new RFL as well.Ring them first to make sure youve got all the right papers and check out how busy they are.Dont go at the end of the month!! Dont forget your new plates and a screwdriver.
