Potty Training

I want to potty train my son, who just turned 3... but he REFUSES to sit on the potty unless he has pants on! I've tried everything I can think of, but he just won't do it! And I know he's ready to be trained, because he tells me every time he needs a diaper change, and every time he's pooping. Any advice?

how about letting him run around without his pants on for a couple of days (if staying home that is lol)

sit him on the potty when hes naked for his bath, before or after.

Praise him highly whenever he sits there for any period without his pants on, whether he goes to the toilet or not.

My daughter never used a potty. She went straight onto the toilet.

potties can be cold and poity! maybe get a more luxurious one or a small "inner" loo seat which is padded?

and for wees, boys can stand up on a step too! much more grown up! lol! xx

both my kids had a potty and one for a tiny tears doll
when dolly used the potty she got praise and got a sweet they soon worked out
if i wee i get rewarded like dolly lol

Star/sticky charts can work very welll... If he gets a certain number of stars/stickies at the end of the week then he can have a smal present. I'm sure there's a mum or dad lurking here who can tell if they have experience of using these charts but certainly the docs here recommend using them when we see a case of a child being particularly problematic to potty train, (not that your child sounds particularly problematic! Just an idea to try).

stickers.. my daughter has never been one for sitting so i stuck a whole load of tinkerbell stickers on her legs and that kept her amused long enough to sit and pee. after a few days the novilty wore off but she understood that she was to sit and pee

we also covered the potty in them aswell

Hi bobbikay, my lot never used a potty they all went straight to the toilet, I had a seat that has a built in kids seat as well as an adult one, best thing ever as they felt grown up using the same seat as everyone else, you get slow closing ones now. I learnt after my first to wait until they are ready, I spent weeks with the eldest trying to train her. With the twins I tried them at 2 and half didn.t work, left it for 6 months and was done in a day. The next set of twins were 3 before they were ready, one kept taking off her nappy when it was wet and the other wanted to be like his brothers and use the toilet, again they were done in a day. I just put pants on them and let them run around coulple of mishaps, but they didn't like the feeling of wet pants, not a fan of pull ups, they feel like nappies. Sounds like he is nearly there, I'd leave him for a few more months and then try again. Good luck you will get there, just go at his pace.
