/// The innocuous remark at a public meeting was seized upon by an equality campaigner – and the ensuing race row has lasted six months at a cost to the taxpayer of tens of thousands of pounds.///
I just cannot believe this tens of thousands of pounds wasted over someone referring to gossip as the 'Jungle Drums'
Well you might say being 'Right Wing' I would say this, but 'Right' 'Left' or in the 'Middle', can anyone put up an argument why these words are racist, or not racist in the least?

As said before it depends on the context
Screamed at a bunch of young Black men by a Union Jack wearing skin-head - yep they probably are.
It's not an expression that's in itself specifically racist like certain notorious words have become but it's quite capable of being used in a racist or in a non-racist manner

John Thomson, deputy leader of the Tory-run council, admitted that ‘it may be political correctness’ but insisted: ‘The law makes it clear that what matters is not the intention of the person who uses the phrase but whether anybody is offended by it.’
So if I decide to get offended by the the term 'currant bun' it will automatically be regarded as racist will it?
This is like something out of Kafka.

Does anyone know what legislation John Thomson, deputy leader of the Tory-run council, is referring to? Or has he mixed up equality advice with the law?
This person obviously wasn't being racist and I doubt it has cost the council thousands of pounds to write a 10 page report about the incident ... the council will however save may thousands of pounds by not funding the group anymore - might they have just been looking for an excuse not to pay towards this and seized on the complaint from one nutter to justify it

To my way of thinking this is a perfect example of just how stupid our pc brigade have got. "Can't see wood for the trees" - oh dear that must mean a jungle clearing, therefore it could mean Africa or where ever, therefore it is talking about race ergo it is racist. Get a life.
I don't like racism and some remarks are totally wrong. But jungle drums!
