Innuendos concerning the prescribing and dosage of Ibuprofen have been banded about in threads both in serious conversation and in, I am afraid to say, jocular mode.

Ibuprofen is an analgesic and antipyretic which can be used in the long term and indeed the short term to great effect in the control of temperature and pain.

It has its contraindications and drug interactions.

The dose of 600mgms has also been a controversial feature of this topic and it is for a short period of time a recognized and safe dose. Indeed on the continent of Europe it can be bought at the pharmacy in 600mgm tablet form.

Perhaps this has gone some way in correcting the misapprehensions and myth of some ABers.

Sqaddy, a good opportunity to ask this question -

At that special time of the month I take 2000mgm Ibuprofen two times a day for four or five days. Would this eventually 'hurt' me?
In my opinion nobody should take drugs without checking contraindications and not all drugs are suitable for everyone. Anyone with any common sense can work that out surely? It`s not that difficult is it if one has a modicum of common sense and an ability to peruse the internet.
Society I am in no way medically qualified but your dosage is above the top level for adults and seems excessive though of course you may well have been prescribed this?
At the time taking ibruprofen it was intended as a long term solution for me to avoid having to have the hip replacement, ibruprofen relieved the pain by taking 1-2 tablets per day instead of 8 paracetamols per day. But I did as my doctor advised and stuck to the paracetamol. He was very stern about it. My grand daughter is taking ibruprofen when she needs to for the debilitating headaches she has, these have been going on now for over a year. The chances are she will outgrow them probably a hormone related illness, but another doc at MK Hospital where she ended up last week with a bad throat infection and migraine, said she could have a long-term viral infection which is causing it, in the meantime shes taking antibiotics and the tablets previously prescribed.
I can't take any pain killers apart from paracetamol. All the others cause me gastric pains (ulcer).
Gosh Society I agree with Mamy. That`s an awfully high dose isn`t it?
Well of course if prescribed then your physician will know the history.
Thanks Mamy. The pain is always so intense, less than four is never effective. I've been taking it for some years now. I used to use Anaprox but Ibuprofen is cheaper and easier to obtain.
Speak to GP Society that is too much hun.

<<<<He said they caused stomach bleeding. Indeed a friend of mine was having tests for leukaemia, she was feeling quite ill, until it came out she had been taking ibruprofen daily for 6 months or so <<<<

All drugs...even Aspirin and Paracetamol have side effects in SOME people and one has to balance these against the benefits of pain relief.....which is significant in someone with OsteoArthritis.

There is NO evidence to link Leukaemia with Ibuprofen.......that is scaremongering, although you did not mean it to be so.

Yes, Ibuprofen MAY cause intestinal bleeding in SOME cases.

However.....the patient has the choice whether to take the drugs.
