Your best chance is to be really angry - more than he is - and convince him that you will do him serious injury. This is how an old lady with a stick can beat a tough young crim!
By far the best idea is to let them take something, then make a lot of noise - they have an excuse to leave and have gone off with something to show.
Saves blood on your nice clean carpets...

Blimey - the thing that has amazed me most about this thread is that there are no dissenters. Usually when there is a 'reasonable force' thread there are always a few people on this site (they know who they are) who will argue that killing a burglar goes beyond reasonable force and that the householder should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Punching someone in the temple would be an extremely difficult thing to do as its a very natural instinct to protect the head first. unless you are a fairly hefty guy that can throw a good well aimed punch I would probably not even think that hitting someone in the temple would do much more than pi$$ someone off and give them a headache, it hurts!
I love everybody's support for Tony Martin
Seem to forget he had an illegal firearm Pump action shotgun (illegal since Hungerford)
And later arrested for having stolen number plates in his car - although the Police couldn't make the charges stick!
Still don't let facts interfere with a nice self-righteous violent buzz!
So does your support for killing criminals just stop at the crimes that you don't feel sympathy for? or shall we execute tax evading criminals doing "cash jobs".
How about Hackers? - will we just execute the ones that steal and sell your credit card numbers and release the guys who break into the pentagon?
Shame really, Quassia asked such an interesting and subtle question and the answers were so predictable and dumb!

When I was 18 i came home from college early to find the house had been burgled. I ( perhaps stupidly ) went in to see what happened and when i walked into my bedroom found myself face to face with a man going through my possessions.
He ran at me, shoved me hard against the bedroom wall and by the time I picked myself up he was long gone. The whole confrontation was over in less than 3o seconds and I didn't have time to think about defending myself, never mind time to walk the length of the house , get a knife out of the drawer and use it. Given the choice between him scarpering and me having to defend myself against him; I'm happy that he chose to run.
As others have said, you really don't know how a situation wili pan out until you're in it.

"answers were so predictable and dumb!"
A reference to your own usual crass replies that always ignorte facts and try and obfuscate the obvious.
Tony martin was only burgled I think 13 times before the final straw and he decided enough was enough
re number plates "couldn't make the charges stick!"
the attitude of your comment seems to imply that although he was innocent (not found guilty in any english court of law) you think hes guilty
Good on Tony Martin he ridded the streets of one piece of filth.
and with regards to the OP case
"A burglar stabbed to death after an attempted break-in at a house in Salford, was on police bail for another suspected burglary, it has emerged.
John Leonard Bennell, 27, from Hyde, had been arrested by police in Tamworth, Staffs, earlier this month."

as you say it was all over in a matter of seconds and you didnt have to make a choice, but what if there was time and you did have to make a choice ?
Attack is the best form of defence, myself and a friend some years ago were nearly the victims of 5 scumbags who were going to try and do the old happy slap routine as we came home from the pub (sober !).
Unfortunately for them they picked on the wrong people, I'm pretty sure that even to this day 6 years later they still regret their actions.
I'm just Joe Normal but my friend was up until two years before that attack was ex-SAS and had done various stints as a mercenary in Africa.
He left them in a mess, all repairable but a mess and he topped it off by grabbing all their phones whilst they lay crying and groaning on the floor wondering what had hit them, took pictures of them, and the piece de resistance.... he urinated over them !
I reckon they gave up happy slapping after that.
people like this cannot be allowed to get away with what they are doing, the courts dont seem to be doing much, so until they do people need to look after themselves however they see fit so that they are not at risk and the perpetrators are rendered impotent
and shami chakra whatever her name is can kiss my rrs

It's hard to say bazwillrun although i do agree with you that more needs to be done to stop these scum. However as a smallish nervous woman with no fighting experience I think I would come off worse in any confrontation.
If one of my children was in danger I think that would override anything but if all that was at risk were material possessions then I would still rather they just legged it.

I understand what you are saying and I agree, your own well being is worth more than any material possessions, but sometimes you have no choice but to fight, and i think people need to face up to that and be prepared.
I am not a fighting person either , but I wiill stand my corner and luckily for me that night i was with somebody who was more than capable of dealing with 5 pieces of garbage.
In all the years I have known him that is the only time he has had to defend himself outside of his military service.

Isnt it amazing though, the police are asking for help to find the other culprits, yet the man who was defending his house is kept locked up accused of murder !
you would think that there would be some mechanism in place whereby plod could use some brains and say ok we have a problem here but lets ask the court if we can maybe keep his passport if he has one and or tag him, at least that way we can keep tabs on him and he doesnt stay locked up whilst we sort this out.

Sorry baz, wasn't ignoring you - last day of term here so we went for a picnic.
You were lucky to have your friend with you that night. My husband did ninjutsu for a long time and I wouldn't like to think what he would do to somebody that threatened me or our girls. Like I said I think I would be vicious to defend them but sitting here in my house feeling safe it's very to guess what I would do.
Bottom line - it's a position I hope I, or any of my loved ones, never find myself in.
