They were President of the Continental Congress or President of the United States in Congress Assembled and their position was merely diplomatic in nature as the congress itself held the legislative, judicial and executive powers.

George Washington was elected as the first President of the United States (1789�97) after the U.S. Constitution was adopted. Before that he was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War (1775�83), leading the Americans to complete victory over the British. After the war he served as president of the 1787 Constitutional Convention.
Prior to the PROTUS as we know it, there were 2 President's of the First Continental Congress (1774), 5 President's of the Second Continental Congress (1775 - 1781) and 10 President's of the United States in Congress Assembled (1781-1788).
John Hanson has sometimes been called the First President of the United States, for his service as the President of the congress (1781-1782).
