I have a Victorian silver pocket watch and I cannot work out the makers mark. I really don't think it is English. The mark is 'HV' inside an oval.

The following sites may be of assistance, though I fear that without a country of origin you may have a long search...

http://www.925-1000.com/index.html (silver identification)

http://www.nawcc-index.net/Identification.php (watch identification)

Apologies if these are of no help...

Thanks for those links but had already seen them. It's frustrating, I have searched everywhere but can't find it.
Try your local jeweller/silversmith.
Perhaps pop into a local jeweller & ask? They might have a directory...
Sorry if this is too obvious but is this mark on the movement or the case? Good quality watches, even in silver cases, generally have the name of the maker on the movement. On the case , HV might be the mark of the case maker, rather than the maker of the watch. Why do you think it is foreign ? Are there no hallmarks anywhere inside the case to show the date and the assay office? Foreign silver, commercially imported, will usually have import marks and be hallmarked after importation. This all might help narrow the search.
if you take a photo of the marks we might be able to help Are you certain it is Victorian?

This may be of some help.
The hallmark is a grouse.
The Grouse (Coq de Bruyère) is the Swiss hallmark for Silver of .800 quality.
The grouse in that shape of outline was used from 1882 - 1934
See under Switzerland on this website.

i bought the watch on ebay for £20. had it valued today and its worth around £45. at least i made a bit of profit!
Good for you.
All you have to do now is find someone willing to pay that much. The previous owner obviously wasn't that lucky.
