Many years ago I discovered that much of the produce collected by schools and churches at Harvest and delivered to local people wasn't really needed.
My well off mother helped a young, single mum who couldn't really spare the money for her children's donations at school Harvest. Mum then received a box of goodies she didn't need or want.
I wrote to all the local schools and churches to ask if they would collect tins and packets and donate them to Save the Children instead. Most were more than happy to do this. A few weeks later we held a sale of groceries at reduced prices and have done this for almost twenty years now.
Local, not so well off people can afford a few treats and Save the Children has benefited to the tune of many thousands of pounds.
