shattered glass everywhere, why does this happen? the whole light fitting fell on floor with a bang.

Still no closer to finding out why this happened.
There's a vacuum inside the bulb, so air is constantly pushing in against the glass, subjecting it to stress. Further, the metal in the bulb's cap will contract and expend due to heating and cooling, adding to the stresses on the glass. If there's any significant weakness in the glass, those stresses can cause it to implode.

If the whole light fitting blew down, my first thought would be some kind of fault in the rose. If you no experience of electrics get in touch with a sparky to come and give it the once over.
This is what happened with me, but it kept happening to every bulb I put in there.
Had a sparky look at it and he took the rose off and everything inside was "shattered" (his words) so you may want to have a look at that. Bloody scary when it happens, huh!
