He can say to anybody in conversation - for example - ' i understand the word *** is a very emmotive word , with negative connotations '

SP if it sounds wrong that is, as I mentioned, a result of people being illogical and accepting behaviour from one that they don't from another. But it is still the same behaviour and thus should adhere to the same standards.

Was he using the word in such a way as to belittle or discriminate against black people?

Or was he using it to suggest black solidarity by adopting a wird that has, traditionally, been used in a belittling way by white people ... in other words, the same way that black rappers use the word?

i understand the points from both sides, the past exponent of using this word was Richard Pryor, who was the funniest but often foul mouthed man on the planet, he used it in his act a lot. Watch any did blaxplotation movie, or listen to rap music, a term that is used by blacks to other blacks, specifically in USA. I must say though i don't like the word, and never did. Perhaps it was the wrong gig for this type of comedy, don't know.

I find it hard to believe that the person who booked the act (at a great cost) was unaware of the fact that use of the 'n' word was a major part of his repertoire. He is widely known for it.

I'd have to agree with him. I think it's unsuitable material for the occasion, and they should have done their homework.
Fine for Reg's regular stand up act though. I don't have any problem with that.

If you hire a comedian who is wll known for his social commentary, and his frequent use of certain expressions, then you cannot balme him for performing his act - as he was contracted to do.

The failure lies fairly and squarely with Clarke Carlisle, and it is for him to issue an apology to anyone who was embrassed or offended by his totally unsuitable choice of entertainer.
