The surname will start with an S.
I've googled and got nowhere. Thanks for any help.

If 6 letters could well be John Snagge.
Probably John Snagge, but haven't found corroboration - yet.
I've tried googling, but a letter count would be handy ?
Can't find definitive proof of sobriquet, but as he often started broadcasts with "This is London", it seems likely.

Didn't know the letter count but Jorn Snagge looks a good bet. I hadn't heard of him.

It would help to know how many letters.
John Snagge he did !"Down your way",The Boat Race,This is London and many other commentaries.He was the old John Humphries and had a nose in everything.
