On starting the engine the rev counter and speedo goes up to maximum then back to the start, any ideas, i am also having problems starting the vehical

Sometimes lack of power from the battery causes wierd dashboard needle flickerings, combined with poor starting your battery could be on the way out.

Try the battery connections expecially the earth connection. Also look around the engine and you will find a earth strap from the engine block to the body.

Cleaning up these connections may well cure your problem, because a bad earths can have the effect of making electronic signals unstable and also effect the power of the starter motor and spark plugs
