Good quotations, naomi, but open to interpretation as to the extent of the covering, IMO - and interpreted differently in different parts of the world, and interpreted to the extreme by the extremists. "Covering" doesn't to me indicate wrapping yourself from head to foot. The great majority of women of any faith (or none) don't flaunt their bodies, we cover by wearing normal modest clothes when we go out and about. I still believe those quotations can be (and are) interpreted to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the community in which the Muslim woman lives. That's MY interpretation, evidently just one of many!

Boxy, but your interpretation doesn't really matter, does it. You're not Muslim. The fact is because of verses like that women continue to be subjugated. There is no excuse.

No, my opinion doesn't matter in the wider scheme of things - but my many Muslim friends interpret these words that way, none of them cover completely, some wear Western clothes and a headscarf, some don't wear the headscarf except in the mosque. Their choice. Liberal Western menfolk are happy with it (says it all readlly, doesn't it?!)
