Stuck on last clue 24d "Contract long expired in German city" (5). I have A*I*S I'm sure it should be obvious but can't figure it out. Any help gratefully received !

Yes I am sure of the letters but completely red faced as I gave the wrong clue. I had already solved 24d...and you're right, it was Essen. I shall give up doing crosswords late at night.
The clue I need to solve is "sign of tooth decay? Beginning to fall out! (5) A*I*E. Sorry.
