Nearly forgot,Mike. We tend not to talk about politics much in the sort of pubs I use. Though from what I can gather, you'll be pleased to hear, most of them support Labour because their parents did.

mikey....OK we disagree about Europe for the electorate, but we agree on the slow rate of recovery, job losses, interest rates for savers..............did either of us think just before the last Election that either party really had the answer to the state of the UK, indeed Europe or the world. No......a poisoned chalice to the winner......and nobody won.........the electorate was no help.

There are signs of recovery....small....maybe at the moment insignificant.....but they are there....for what it is worth.

Svejk...Personally I think £6ph is pathetic. If we're going to have a minimum wage, let's set it at a reasonable level. (I was on £6ph 30 yrs ago & I struggled to get by on it.)

I think so too, which is why I voted for Labour 1997, along with millions of others. If John Major had won that election we probably wouldn't have a national minimum wage.

I still maintain that it is an all-round Good Thing.

And devolution is popular in Wales and Scotland, another thing that the Tories didn't give us, but that they support now. ( I wonder if there is a connection between the lack of support for devolved government in Wales and Scotland amongst the Tories, and the fact that there were no Tory MPs in both of those parts of the UK, after the 1997 Election !)

Svejk.....LOL....I was brought up in an area where the Labour Clubs had the best snooker tables, the cheapest beer and the best acts...Shirley Bassey, Joe Dolan, the Shadows, all subsidised by the Unions.

On one election, the Conservative guy came into our area and he was set upon and beaten up....nasty business, but you get the picture.

Sqad, where were you brought up ? Canton (it's in Cardiff, for all you saisin) ?

It's poor for Labour if they haven't got a substantial 'mid-term' lead. And 18 months is a long time. In that period, people may begin to feel the benefits of any economic recovery, since that always takes time to show itself beyond the simple figures. Looks liked the Tories are a safe bet. What really is a loser for Labour is their leader. He doesn't look or sound like a man who could lead a country.

By the way: is there any evidence that East Anglian farmers pay less than the minimum wage? I am one, but don't happen to employ 'immigrant labour; I have contractors who don't and my in- house employees are from the village, but it is possible that, strictly speaking, farmers in the Fens get away with it because seasonal labour may work very long hours per day at peak times.

As to new Range Rovers, well I drive a Skoda ! We get subsidy via the EU but it is declining over the years, as planned.

modeller in the capital - that is where, and many won't be voters of any kind, seeing how many are here illegally, asylum seekers and indeed people who have no interest in British way of life or it's political system.
it's become the place that they all want to come to, but so many are poor to downright skint

it is also what i said when those who support labour, crowed about how they are so far ahead in the field, the British electorate is pretty fickle, and that a day in politics is usually a day wasted.
