How can I wrap a Christmas cake up safely but also protect the icing, especially a little Christmas tree design that I've made myself on top using some green food coloring?

Cellophone Gift wrap from Hobbycraft. I have used this type of wrapping for some years .
One of those cardboard cake boxes
decorate as late as possible and then wrap in cellophane, the later you wrap it the better it will be!...
see if you have one of those little plastic things you get when you buy pizza, to top the lid squashing the pizza, and wrap the cellophane over that. (Why are you wrapping it up? I'd put it in an airtight box myself...)
I agree with Boxy, I wouldn't wrap it, best to go in a tin or tupperware like container.
Cake tin. Then don't drop or shake or turnover the tin.

I was told to wrap it in grease proof paper and then in tinfoil and then store in an airtight container so that's what I've done. No one mentioned using cellophane to me. I find it irritating because you n basically have to use a new piece each time you unwrap something using it.
