In an earlier post a fellow ABer suggested that CCTV cameras should be done away with, anyone agree with this poster?

Take this example:

/// Five councils in London and at least two outside the capital, are involved in the trial, slammed by actor and parking campaigner Tom Conti as 'Stasti-style' surveillance, according to manufacturer Videalert. ///

"Stasti style surveillance", that's a little over the top surely?

/// Surely the DM and the ST could have done everybody a favour by changing the scare tactics of their almost identical headlines, to something along the lines of :::: ///

/// " Stupid parents endanger the lives of children and then complain when they are caught red-handed" ///

Don't give up your day job, if you have one, because there certainly isn't a future in journalism for you.

I am quite prepared to debate any story printed by the Daily Mail that is shown to be total lies or even a distortion of the facts.

judging by some almost every story printed by the Daily Mail is accused of doing at least one.

So I challenge you all to enter your latest ones, no delving into history, just recent examples please.
AOg...what daft things you do say. If there isn't a job as a journo on the DM for me, well all the better !

I can't understand you sometimes. You posted this topic and you plainly think that "Stasti syle surveillance", that's a little over the top surely ? is true. Otherwise why would you have used that very sentence in the first place ?

But when I and others point out the real agenda of the DM in using such a headline, you turn tail and change your tack.

Make up your mind...are the DM being over the top or not ?
Actually AOG, I did have a journo job on a newspaper, years ago, so I will take no lectures from you on the subject !
I do not think the choice is as binary as that.One cast be against the proliferation and intrusion of CCTV into every walk of life, whilst at the same time recognising their value in crime prevention etc.

The temptation and potential for abuse is always there.Others may disagree, but I do not think the title of most surveilled state is a title to be glad about.
@doctorb
//I don't agree jno.

I've always felt that labour and the left tends to be the most suspicious and interfering of the political movements. Even more so within its own ranks. //

But the CCTV installed in shops, factories etc. is all privately owned, not government owned. The economy did that all by itself. '

Cameras which monitor entire shopping streets or public car parks and so forth, okay, they will be local authority owned, i.e. state funded.

But there was never any state-run effort to put the general public under camera surveillance, big-brother style.

It may be perfectly normal paranoia to believe it was so but that's normal and nothing to worry about.

The former USSR definitely was controlling and paranoid but that was just because it was such a travesty of socialism that people brainy enough to realise it but too daft to keep their mouths shut about it had to be detected and caught quickly.

For gods sake ! To listen to the debate here on this subject you could be forgiven for thinking that Orwells 1984 had arrived !

These parents are trying to use the Jeremy Clarkson defence..."its my car and I demand to be able to do whatever I like with it, and I don't want anybody to interfere in any way"

These people are putting the lives of their kids, as well as all the others in to danger, and anything that deals with that would seem to be welcomed.

They were just highlighting the over top statement of The Scottish actor Tom Conti which has been pointed out to you by others on AB, so do try and keep up.

Incidentally the Headline has now been changed and the reference to Conti's over the top statement has now been moved way down the report.

*** The Scottish actor Tom Conti, 71, who drops his grandchild off at school in London, compared the camera system to surveillance by the Stasi. ***

I thought that the Reveille went out of publication years ago.
