Magnolia Roots

My neighbour is altering her garden and is giving me her magnolia tree.How big is the root system likely to be? Any tips for moving it at this time of year?

Can I just tell you something about Magnolia trees. I spend a huge amount of time in the autumn as the garden is covered with the leaves and I gather them up week after week. And now, each day I am collecting large bags of blossom littering like snow over garden, pond, paths etc. Mine is quite a big tree and probably one you are taking on is small, but it will one day be big!

Well its up and replanted. Its about 6 feet tall. I have watered it in well so fingers crossed .
