Is Tony Blair Bonkers ?
So Blair is advocating we get involved in Iraq again ! Is he mad ?
I suggest we parachute him into Baghdad . He can talk them to death . That's the only thing he excels at. With any luck we wouldn't see him again .
Maybe he wants to be their president since no one wants him in Europe.

Sunni and Shia have been at loggerheads (and that's putting it mildly) for about 1500 years and their continuing disagreement involves the rightful successor to Mohammed. However, not content with keeping their differences between themselves, fanatics are united in one cause - that of imposing Islam upon the rest of the world. In this situation there are no 'good guys'. They're all bonkers!
Naomi....I am aware of the Sunni/Shia situation, although I couldn't pass an exam in the subject !
But if we don't seek out the moderates, what alternative do we have ?
The situation in Syria is an absolute scandal, and the whole region would appear to a basket case. But millions of completely innocent people are involved, most of them children. The surrounding more moderate countries are inundated with refugees....10,000's more have joined then in the last few days.
I'm not sure what the best thing is to do...indeed, there may be no overall "good thing" just the less worst of out a collection of sorry solutions. But to do nothing is not an option. I am not suggesting a military answer but something needs to be done.
The region may be on a par with "a far-off country, of which we know little" but it impinges on the whole of Europe, as well as farther afield.

Mikey, //But if we don't seek out the moderates, what alternative do we have ? //
But where are we going to look for them? Where are they? I agree something must be done, but this goes much deeper than worrying about the humanitarian situation. The threat to the rest of the world from radical Islam is growing ever greater - and if we don't acknowledge this as a serious wake-up call we will regret it.

/// It was lucky you missed WWII or we'd all be speaking German now. ///
You know absolutely nothing about me except that unlike you I did serve in the RAF, and again unlike you I did not miss WW2.
So please get your fact right.
And do you really think that if we had lost WW2 we would now all be talking German? Yet another ridiculous statement to make.

/// Is the threat from militant Islam any greater than that of the Red Menace which fuelled the Cold War for nearly half a century? ///
As regards the 'Red Menace' we acknowledged them as a threat and were prepared, but some are not prepared to acknowledge Islam as a threat, and in the meantime they are continuing in their quest for world domination.

the indiscriminate iteration "they are all bonkers" is neither helpful nor accurate, either at home or, in this case, abroad imo

Humbersloop - I read the Grauniad article by an Iraqi, saying we all loved each other in the good old days....
I am not sure
The large Jewish minority in Iraq is meant to remain from the Babylon Captivity ( 500 BC) and the reluctance of some to return when Cyrus 'won'. But they have all gone now as a result of being ejected.
I think it is more like Northern Ireland - for years we lived in peace and then for twenty years we were at each others throats....
