Arthritis can never be cured it can be managed help with the symptoms. It is a long term problem you will probably need treatment for the rest of your life so go for the NHS , BUPA treatment will have a time limit.

Back Pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Before you make any choice, we need to know what investigations you have had and if you have seen a medically qualified person.
Well, you have seemed to have made up your mind after one reply.
I couldn't believe it, but I was told several years ago that my back pain was severe spinal arthritis. It is really very bad, I've seen the X-rays and I only have about 4 vertebrae which are not suffering. It was all complicated by hips disintegrating and needing replacement etc., etc.. I finally found a good physio/osteopath who has rendered me pain-free for at least the last 3 months, so I recommend that route.

You will, like me, need treatment from time to time, for the rest of your life. I've not had any for over three months (after being signed off after 2nd hip replacement) - I'm only 65 and was very, very healthy and athletic; 3rd in UK for over 40's High Jump! At least I am now walking the dog etc. and am pain-free. It can be managed, so be encouraged.
I would like to ask.... (having re-read your post) who told you it was arthritis and what tests did you have? Does your x-ray show clearly the white build-up?
Sorry, I hadn't read clearly first time. If it is arthritis, as I posted, all is not lost.

Yes, confirmed by GP and physiotherapist. Thanks for all replies. Also wonder if acupuncture is effective?
It never really goes away. Keeping in constant movement is probably the best thing. I recently started doing yoga, and it has helped me quite a bit. Whenever I don't do it for a few days, I can really feel the pains again.
