Since those with a Black and Minority Ethnic background, only account for 14% of the British population, why does the Met Police deem it necessary to set a 40 per cent target for recruiting BME officers?

I would of thought that the police and fire authorities would have learn't by now that targeting certain groups usually ends up as an expensive litigation payment when these groups are recruited. Because they have been targeted for recruitment they seem to believe they are a special case and can change rules and procedures to suit them. The police...

Certain people will always assume that black people or women get on in life simply by playing the card that they have been dealt.
Some people will play those cards, and this is selfish and very counterproductive, because the overwhelming of people (of all races) are good at what they do (think of the bell curve - it nearly always follows).
And remember, there are plenty of white privileged men who got where they are because of the cards that they have. I used to work in the City of London, near Cornhill, and I assure you that if you went to the right school, or had the right familial connections, you would get preferential treatment in the job market.

I have no idea how the performance management process works in the police.
However, I believe that people who have not achieved what they thought they could achieve in life (because of their own limitations) are likely to look around for someone to blame.
Ethnic minority coppers who play the race card are guilty of this, as too are white coppers who failed to climb the career ladder and are looking around for someone to blame.
At some point, both groups need to acknowledge that perhaps they're just average...nothing special.

Firstly allow me to apologise for not responding to your 1657 post more promptly as I was engaged in watching an afternoon of good rugby on TV.
If you would indulge me I would like to draw an interesting analogy here.
England sported a team of not entirely white players. These players help to secure a win against Scotland because of their ability and skill in the game.
If they were useless players and only selected to satisfy some faceless wonders political agenda it would be an expensive exercise in PC and England may have lost the match.
May I refer you to my best answer post.Political correctness is an expensive exercise in recruitment in the Fire Brigade and Police Service. It normally ends in a huge pay out to some aggrieved person who was specially selected because of their colour, gender etc and are not really fit for the career they pursue.I would sooner have a black efficient and capable officer come to my assistance than a white incapable officer.

This woman believed she was a token and indeed I believe she was for the sake of PC.I knew of at least 50/60 white female police officers who served in Royalty Protection,Special Branch,SEG,DPG Airport Police (LHR) who all carried firearms and did their duty.I don't recall any of them complaining that they were not promoted within the specialist branch they chose or even show cased because of their colour and the fact they carried firearms
You know sp this PC exercise causes more resentment and dissatisfaction within the police and other services when an Incapable uniform carrier is recruited not because of his/her ability but because of his/her race or gender.
To answer your question at last( I did ask you to indulge me). I am saying that the Dazaei case is a costly folly to you and me who financed his legal aid for appeals etc.He was certainly not overlooked for promotion in his career. He was accepted back in to the service after winning appeals at our expense only to be arrested yet again and finally imprisoned at our expense. I do not want people being especially singled out to be welcomed into the police service or Fire Brigade just to use it as a cash cow because those services do not pander to their whims.

Here here retro.
There is absolutely no need to impose quotas of BMEs, gays, women, transgenders, less able, dwarfs, Muslims or any other minority to ensure that public services "reflect" the communities they serve. Regardless of their composition they serve only one community - all the people who live or work in their catchment area. Those providing the service and those being served must recognise and accept this because anything else achieves no purpose and simply leads to the divisions you describe.
