If the son's condition is honestly declared, you may well find that you cannot get cover at a sensible price. If the condition is not declared and use of holiday insurance is required, even if for a reason completely unrelated, the insurance is likely to be void.

I dont see why not. When the stitches come out the wound will not be an open wound. Cover with an occlusive dressing (nurse will do this anyway and should give him some spares). He should start taking regular aspirin now and wear compression hosiery also as DVT will be a risk factor due to time on table during op/bedrest following op. Check he is not on any other NSAIDs before recommending aspirin (ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium)
A general rule of thumb is a delay of approx 2 weeks after surgery, although this can be more following abdominal and retinal surgery.
