Baby Killed By Family Pet Terrier.
This is a tragic case. How that poor baby must have suffered, and the family must be going through agony. I cannot understand, though, why the police might have arrested the baby's father. What might he be charged with?

People suffering illness, including permanent disability, is probably the most common "side effect" of having dogs (viz Toxocara Canis).
In the USA the gun lobby say people are the problem, guns are not. Meanwhile those who advocate getting rid of guns say there will be no gun crime without guns. Regarding dogs there is not really any analogous discussion going on, at least not to the extent that it is covered in the media, yet there are almost certainly far more people adversely affected by dogs being in very close proximity to large parts of the population in the Western World than by guns in the USA, not least in non-USA locations where the gun debate is widely looked upon as a no-brainer (i.e. that it is obvious that guns don't belong in society).
In both cases it is a question of a debate as to whether a cultural totem is to be devalued.
