Small shallow holes

I am encountering small shallow holes (3/4'' to 7/8'') in my back yard. The ground is very hard and dry. It has been a dry summer but the grass is still reletively green. we live in Louisville, KY....

In most WW11 films & documenteries I've seen, British bombers, Lancasters etc are heavily camaflaged while American ones, B29s etc are shiny aluminium. Whats the reason for this?
