Birds and softened water

Is there any difference in giving wild birds 'softened' water rather than the stuff straight out of the hard-water tap? (we live in a very hard water area and use a water-softener)

Body popping when trying to nod off

Why is it when you are about to fall asleep your body pops (sudden movement) which sometimes wakes you up? Is there any way to prevent this because I look stupid on the train!!!
