Eating soil

My friend has a 4 month old Border Collie pup who keeps eating soil and mud, both in the garden and out of indoor plantpots. Is this a sign of some sort of deficiency or just normal ' puppiness ' ?...

Still stuck. Can get info on Pc screen but it just wont save and as soon as i remove the usb cable the texts disappear,not saved anywhere. What am I doing wrong ?
