National Park has been deliberately shot at with a bow and arrow and hours later when that hadn't killed him he was shot and killed by an American dentist. The killing itself is bad enough but the repercussions for Cecil's offspring are dire.

I find it strange that game rangers, guides, wild life film makers etc etc are frowned upon if they terminate a wild animals life, no matter how cruel and harsh the circumstance s - that the way it is in the bush, let nature take it's course etc, etc. Yet a hunter can pay a shedload of money to kill for a trophy and interfere with the status quo in an area and, in this...

Hinters see no problem with killing animals and point out most of us eat meat. But this is different for a number of reasons.
First off the Lion isn't usually eaten. this is killing for the thrill of it. Then it was deliberately lured outside of the protected area. Then it wasn't killed humanely, outright, but spend hours presumably suffering. And then there is the fact that it was part of a science investigation which is now seriously affected.
Whoever was responsible (and I know he claims he thought it was a legitimate government approved hunt (which is a good reason not to allow it at all) and not a bribe on a "caper" he was in on; all those involved have a case to answer.
It puts humanity in a bad light to opt to kill for the thrill of it. It would be better if this was mainly a thing of the past. That culling was only done when it could be justified for whatever reason: and then done by professionals who would do it properly.

And just to make it absolutely clear about the rangers/guide stance - if the injury or situation have been caused naturally then there is no intervention but if it is caused by humans 1.e. a snare or indeed Cecil then they will step in and end the suffering. Hope this clears up any misunderstanding.
