I have no sentimentality as regards what other nations eat as long as it is farmed and reared for the purpose of food. However stealing pets or watchdogs and turning into a spectacle is what irks me.

Thank you so much, you're all brilliant. And thank you for putting on Facebook mm.
I have signed it.

No. It is a somewhat hysterical piece of writing. Whilst I would not consciously eat dog meat I see no reason for others not to.

We have a curious relationship with animals and what we consider to be acceptable to eat.

I have been to Qinping market in Guangzhou and was shocked at the range of animals on sale for you to take home and turn into supper.

Whilst I might not like the the idea I accept it as a practice of other nations. They may well be horrified at our habit of eating fluffy little lambs.....

I agree with Eccles. Who are we to tell someone what animals are acceptable to eat?

I'm not a big meat eater but I'd happily eat mussels/oysters/lobsters/crab....
Well surely they should breed and farm them as we do with cattle/sheep etc.

Would it be acceptable for me to steal a farmers livestock?

Whilst I abhor the practice I don't believe for one moment that a UK Petition will make any difference to a Local Authority in China however many sign it.
Nor am I prepared to put up with the deluge of unsolicited Junk Mail that follows signing a 'change.org' petition.
But Good Luck with it anyway.
No, Mams, they should be breed humanely, in an ideal world.

Thank you again to those who have signed. No problem if you don't want to sign.

Baldric I don't think it will make much difference either but I thought it was worth a try anyway. Thank you for responding all the same. I have signed about 4 different Change petitions and am pleased to report I haven't been deluged with Junk mail, (possibly as I'm on a Mac) in fact I get about one a month. What I do get is asked to sign another petition of a similar nature to one I have already signed, but only now and again. If I feel strongly enough to sign a petition I can live with reasonable consequences.

I thank my lucky stars I don't live in a country where my dog might get stolen and eaten.
Ladybirder... What I do get is asked to sign another petition of a similar nature to one I have already signed, but only now and again.

Same here, no junk mail.
It is the same with me too, no junk mail.
I find this an awkward one to make a decision on. One can not eat some species and yet condemn other races for eating different species. That would be hypocritical. Yet comments on the "change" site show that most either do not realise this, or choose to ignore it.

The claim is that pets are rounded up. If so then that is wrong. Ideally food animals should be especially bred and enjoy a good life prior to their unexpected demise. But then I wonder if it is a case of pets being nicked after all, or whether they 'kill two birds with one stone' by ridding the place of problem strays whilst providing the meat at the same time. If so that is understandable and I then have to ask myself whether the emotional individual who started this has truly stated the situation without bias.

I don't think this is very clear and I feel damned if I sign and damned if I don't.
Done.

OG it is the method of obtaining the dogs and cats, who is to say stray or someone's lost pet, that is so wrong and the barbaric way of killing them if what we read is to be believed.

I've found article in The Guardian from 2010 in which Chinese legal experts are calling for a ban on eating cats and dogs. Obviously they have not been successful but as it says in the article, "In recent years, however, such traditions are increasingly criticised by an affluent, pet-loving, urban middle class. Online petitions against dog and cat consumption have attracted tens of thousands of signatures. Videos showing the maltreatment of farmed dogs have spurred protests at markets where the animals are bought and sold."

So hopefully, this practice will die out, eventually, with or without our help.
