Meal Worms

I bought a bag of dried meal worms for the ground feeding and insectivorous wild birds that come into my garden but I was disappointed by the birds lack of interest in them, even though its been bitterly cold.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or found a better alternative ?

I agree with you. The only birds that love them to the point of gluttony are starlings. They seem to smell them in a wild bird mixture as soon as I put feed out . Robins are supposed to love them but not interested. Starlings are a pest round here in Hampshire but once they have scoffed the worms they lose interest .
Sunflower hearts are going down well up here Chips, both on the ground and in a feeder tube. I think that when the mealworms are dry and there is snow on the ground the birds struggle to remove the outer husk. I notice that the Tits seem to take one, of their choice, and then head for a safe perch in the bushes and trees to safely eat.
