Pups are usually eager to learn and with perseverance you will be able to train her properly .

Most definitely not!! you never hit a puppy!!!
try turning your back on the puppy when he jumps up and face him/her and make a very small fuss when he/her goes down, but immediately turn your back if it gets excited again and starts jumping up, it will soon realize that it gets no attention when jumping up!!

Hi Yvonne, it sounds as if you already know all the "tricks", so you don't need advice. Your friend needs to see that frightening a dog into behaving is wrong. A lot of things "worked" for previous generations, but I think things have moved on since then. So many dog training and handling experts tell us that aggression begets aggression, and I really think it's true. Would you (not you personally!) teach a child to behave by slapping it across the face every time it did something unacceptable? To me, it's one and the same.
I can't understand why she thinks I need this kind of advice Megan is my 4th lab. My previous one was so obediant beyond belief. It was her attitude that really got my goat because it was her dad that did it it must be right.
I find the best why to stop them jumping up when they are still young is to ignore them especially when you get up in the morning and when you come in - i f they are being too boisterous.
ps Megan has just been for a swim in the garden pond quite a good swimmer for her age but the fish weren't very keen
