Seen that on the news that this is already available over the counter in London and is suggested to be rolled out across the country?

What do you think about that x

I have real concerns about this. Sex under 16 is illegal. Yes I know that it happens ( Idont live in a bubble). Pregnancy is not the issue here ,unprotected sex is so I think its a no go.
I would rather 13 year old children giggled at the mere mention of anything sexual instead of trying to prevent pregnancy. They seem to be losing their sense of innocence in our modern society. I wonder if our generation encourages children to grow up far too quickly ?

I may be wrong, but i think pregnancy is the issue? They want to avoid teenage pregnancy....as you say it does happen! Younger and younger!

I went on the pill myself at 15..... Didnt inform anyone...

I think that they should be taught to use the pill and condoms to prevent STI's and double protect against pregnancy.

I dunno about it- how are they going to controll what kind of pill- and wen you get a repeat at the docs they check your BP....x
I agree Flump ,its sad childhood is far to short.

I think 13y olds know more than we think they do- seriously i do.

It be nice for them to be a little more nieve but they arent these days- not all i may add, but most arent.

Id rather if they were taking risks that theyre protected. I hope if i have kids i can be open with them- xx
If it stops more single mothers benefits beingn paid out then I am all for it.
I agree Nannybooby. Are the pharmacists going to give these young girls a check up before giving the pill, I always had my blood pressure done before getting a prescription, what if there is a family history of thrombosis that the child doesn't know about. I remember a few years back, a young girl was given the pill and died, very rare I know but why take the risk with kids. Whilst taking the pill, they probably are not going to think about using condoms, much more dangerous IMO than getting pregnant. I'm really struggling with this.
What a good idea.

Despite warnings about STD's they still continue to rise..so warnings go unheeded. Teenage aged pregnancies are the highest in Europe despite contraceptive advice.

Girls can't keep their knickers on and boys can't keep it on their trousers. This is not for the well brought up children with morals installed by their parents, but for the increasing number of "badly brought up children" who have had little moral guidance or indeed supervision.

Great idea.

Underage sex remains illegal- but it goes on... I think the pill should be available, just not sure that it can be monitored as effectively as at the doctors.

Similarly heroin use use is illegal but pharmacies provide clean needles to resuce risk?

Also pharmacies and doc surgeries provide free condoms on tap- which these 13y olds can access??? Do you find the pill much different!?

(devils advocate here- not too sure how i feel about it yet tbh) xxx
Tinkerbell , what I meant is that bad as an unwanted pregnancy is there are far worse things by way of stds , some of which cant be treated with a dose of antibiotics. Non presciption pill would not address this issue so I think it shouldnt be available.
Squad , dont think social class comes into it - think peer pressure is more like to be the case
Question Author
Theres not any rules that im aware of if a child of 13 goes to their GP they can have the pill so this is really just making it a little more accessable than it already is i think? Same with the free condoms- which i also got at 15.

Glad i was clever enough to at least protect myself. I got that from magazines and pals cos i never had a chat like that with parents and i went to a catholic school!!!!

I see what you mean nanny.

I think i actually feel like its already available anyhow....

Any protection against unwanted pregnancy is good- same with STIs and the free condoms, rather that than a young kid having to go through with a pregnancy or worse termination- all for the sake of a little pill i suppose.

Xxx
I think we have to adopt a realistic approach here.

No sane person thinks that a thirteen-year-old embarking on a sexual relationship is a good idea, but we have to deal with the world as it is, not as we would like it to be.

On that basis, I would be all in favour of the Pill being available, but with a proper health check, and hopefully some sound advice about protection from STD's, and how to approach a sexual relationship safely, without being coerced by bullying or peer pressure.

It is a shame that puberty and exuality occur ever younger, but that is a simple fact, we have no choice about that - only the effects it can have on children, and we would be failing them if we did not address these issues with a sense of calm maturity and realism instead of Mail-ish hysteria and finger-wagging which helps no-one.

I wonder? I haven't seen any relevant studies on this point

The other loophole that need closing is the pregnant unmarried teenager who gets pregnant to get on the housing list and the benefits that go with it.

This should be stopped.

When i think of 13y old family members doing anything like that it makes me feel ILL theyre sooo young.

But, i think they should be protected.... I really do.

The free conteaception is already available at GPs so why not pharmacies too.

My kids wil be getting told to use both condoms and pills or whatever.

My mum fell pregnant with me and the grandparents were less than pleased and she has horrible memories of it- i never wanted that for myself- if i ever be pregnant i want people to be happy for me.

Then these poor kids who dont take a tiny pill or use a condom get lumbered with a baby or forced to terminate- can ruin their wee lives. God the more i think about it id give the pills/jags/implants anything out to them xx
What do I think of it ? I think it is sad that society considers this is now necessary. One generation is failing to teach the next.
When does illegal not mean illegal? Sex under 16 is supposed to be illegal.
No one claims it isn't.
It is illegal but I agree that prevention of pregnancy is far better than underage pregnancy and possible abortion.
