I know that a person who has Thalassemia Minor can have no symptoms or just when she is pregnant or at a very high altitude....

Do you know if being in a hot climate can cause problems for someone with the condition?

Thanks, Gx

Depends, if she only has the trait, then there is no problem, but if she has the disease thalasemia minor then when her blood is under oxygen deprivation e.g during anaesthesia or heights, then the problem of abdominal crisis may occur.

Nobody told me about the trait...just diagnosed TM when I lived in Canada and had problems.....

I know what to expect at altitude and pace myself accordingly.....just didn't expect to have the same symptoms in extreme heat.....may have to consider winter sports holidays.... ;-)

Thank you...x
Don't do it, Gness!!
PP.thank you I will.
It was my understanding that the complications of thalasemia were the same for sickle cell anaemia.
Are you telling me thatthey are not?
gness....a hot climate should prove no problem.
Do you know where you got it from Gness ( or from whom )

Sickling doesnt occur in thalassaemia where the main problem is anaemia. where is slaney ?
one has a positive sickle test ( but problems in the mixed state is pretty uncommon ) and the other - - - is a highish Hb A2 and negative sickle

actually then you are quite famous

Yup there is a cluster of thalassaemia is Oireland and yes the explanation given to open mouthed medical students was indeed that there were wrecked spanith galleons during the armada, and a few of the sailors said O *** not going home and married Irish girls....

this is beta thalassaemia and you know you just go on doing what you want....Thpain is a hot country

Well I never, Peter! When I was being diagnosed I had to phone my Ma to ask if we had any history in the family that could have carried this.....
She was furious.....we're Irish and have always been Irish! So I shut up....but looking at my Mum's family you'd think they were Spanish so I've always joked I came from a shipwreck......seems I could be right.....
Thank you.... :-)
I think Peter means this Slaney...
