Hospital Bed At Home
246 Answers
It's looking like we may have to have a hospital bed at home when my husband is discharged from hospital.
We already changed from double to singles which is fine but they are both against a wall. Hospital bed will need to allow nurses/ carers to use both side of bed..our second very tiny bedroom is already crammed with other equipment he needs.
Before anyone down sizes make sure you keep this sort of situation in mind.
At this rate I'll be sleeping in the shed!!
I'm normally such an organised person I'm hating this disruption.
The other option is go into care. I really haven't the heart to do that to him. It's like turning someone out of there home.
This isnt a question just me rambling on a sleepless night of worry.

It is amazing what the human body is capable of when the focus is caring for a loved one, old bird. It is obvious from what you have written that you care so much for your OH and I feel that with sufficient help and support you will cope. Let those who will be calling into your home do as much as they can to ease your work load. Thank goodness for the help of nice...

I am well aware of the time between this lady's posts - I look in on this thread regularly about 4 times a day/night. I just want her to know that she and her husband are in my (and others') thoughts and to offer some sort of support as best I can. I am a carer 24/7 for my OH so I feel a certain empathy.
Sorry I haven't been back to update. It's been a roller coaster few weeks.
It's actually week 5 and he's still in hospital.
He has yet another infection..
Ive forgotten what I've said about his health further back but his biggest problemis swallowing..having had a Barium xray early last year and a further barium xray further down a proceedure to stretch the throat was needed to enable him to swallow his food rather than choking most of it back when it wouldn't go down..
This last 5 weeks I now understand it better..he is Aspirating some of the food..meaning it's going down into his lungs..causing Aspiration Pneumonia..
We were told the previous xrays were no good now they needed doing again but he hasn't been well enough to go through with it. Until yesterday when he managed to be off oxygen a while..he had the Barium Xray.
Today I arrived as I have been doing to try and help him take a little nourishment at least.. I greeted him as usual asking how are you today..I'm going to die he said. Pheww not what I expected.
I went to speak to the Doctor who was going to call me anyway. .
He explained about the xray showed a very narrow opening for food..he said he had spoken to my husband about the stretching procedure, explained the risks involved.. might not work, could perforated I can't remember what else. Husband will never give up, he wants to try it..
Whether it works or not there is no more they can do for him in the hospital...his future care would be discussed but a nursing home seems the only option...but we have to get through Friday. Theatre is booked, time will tell, if by Friday he is strong enough to go through with it...sorry its long prob loads of mistakes but as your so kind to follow this up I wanted to update properly..

Bless you, old bird. I am so sorry your beloved is going through all this and it is having a tremendous toll on you as well. His determination is to be admired, truly. I am in awe of how you are coping and I am not understating that. It is so very kind of you to update us fully. There are many here who send you both best wishes and I hope they give you some comfort. Much love to you x
I am sorry to hear Old Bird that your hubby won't be coming home - after 64 years of marriage I am sure you are of an age yourself that it would have been difficult for you to care for him in the way you would have liked. If he gets into a good care and loving home - be very happy that he is getting good care. And of course take good care of yourself too.
