Broken nose

DH had his nose broken on Saturday playing rugby. The swelling has begun to settle down now and it resembles Stephen Fry's bendy nose!!

He hasn't been the drs yet and he isn't at all keen on surgery - he is frightened of being knocked out (he's never had a general anathestic in his life).

Have any of you any experience of this? What will be the outcome if he gets it reset and then breaks it agian (ie will it be inoperable)??

birmingham city manager steve bruce looks pretty bad too...i dont think it becomes inoperable tho,but make sure your breathing through it ok,as the septum inside your nose can get damaged.i had a nose job,being knocked in hospital out aint so bad.

ps..if its bent even slightly to one side and you get a photo taken with a flash camera it looks bleedin awful.....thats why i had a nose job.

He needs to go soon - I broke my nose playing rugby too and was straight down the A+E. They will try and schedule an operation within 14 days as this is when the bones start to heal and when it gets very messy to fix. I did have to have a general but really, nothing to worry about. It's up to him.

Tell the big baby to get to the hospital and get it seen to.:)

The problems can be far worse than a wonky nose - loss of smell, breathing difficulties, snoring and extreme pain in hot or cold weather. All of these can get worse over the years.

stevie-p - couldn't agree more, I had my (already Roman) nose broke playing football about 7 years ago. I hate the whole photo thing, I know exactly what you mean, and am now considering getting it operated on.

DH - tell him not to be so stupid, from someone who has been in this poition and lived to regret it. Get him to a doctor now, and get it sorted on the NHS!

I agree with the others. As one who works in the Op Theatre a nasal MUA(Manipulation Under Anaesthetic) is a very common and swift procedure, usually requiring no more than a minute of anaesthesia(known in the trade as a 'quick wiff'!). He'd be far better getting it fixed ASAP.
