I have heard it said that people who irk you for no obvious reasons but who *really* needle you are "mirrors" to parts of your personality that need to be looked at.

Putting it in other words (if that seemed gobbledygookish); people who get on your tit are telling you something about yourself that you need to deal with.
If you get on *their* tits too, then both parties have issues that need to be dealt with.

I was in Maplins once queueing up to buy something and this rather flustered BOY assumed it was ok to say to me "hold on a minute mate, the till-roll's f***ed".
I said "IT'S WHAT?!!!" (not letting him get away with that) "..er, broken" he replied.
Tchoh !
I would be more upset about the 'mate', rather than the 'f***ed'.

Yes that bothered me too, it was a double-bladed sword of audacity !
I can't stand being called "mate", "bruv" is only marginally less objectionable IMO.
Quite!
If faced with, "I'm sorry, mate, the till roll's broken", or, "I'm sorry, sir, the till roll's f***ed", I would unhesitatingly prefer the latter.
