This might sound like a dumb question but it is possible to do sit ups without putting pressure on the coccyx?

There are many abdominal excercises that wouldnt, but the basic sit-up will probably put some pressure on. Try using one of those excercise balls to cushion the area
Instead of raising your body, raise your legs instead.

Lie on your back, and pull your knees up to your chest, bending your legs as you do
Sorry to hijack your question - can anyone tell me - do you breathe in or out when rising?
Out ... definitely.

Ah yeah, that sounds like it might work JJ. Is it as effective that way?

I can't really work out the ball thing in my head JD?
You are meant to breathe out on the 'way up' :o)

No prob Mrs_O. It's something I hadn't thought about.
beat me to it JJ ;o)
Have you see the big rubber inflatable balls that gyms have?
You would be able to replicate the sit-up movement on the ball and take pressure off the cocccyx

oooohhhh I get it! Duh! Yeah, I knew the type of ball you meant, I think I have one somewhere but I couldn't understand how you would use it for sit ups. Now I do. Ta!
Milly ... yep, just as good.

And you can do it standing up ... put your arms out in front of you, and try to touch your left elbow with your right knee, and then alternate legs. This also works your butt because the "cheek" on your "down leg" has to hold the centre of your body stable. It's a good exercise for a butt pump.

I'm practicing in my office as we speak. Good job I'm on my own today.

Hi..The best place to do sit ups is on a bed...when you are doing them on solid floor..you use 60% of your back muscles...on a bed you use 65% abdominals...
