Dentists

I've got an apointment at my local dentist for the first time later today after moving from one miles away.
I'm only going for a check up seeing as its my first time there, but to put it mildly im bricking it already, sweaty palms and everything (I'm such a baby)
Anyhoo...
Can you tell the dentist "look, unless my teeth are in danger of literally falling out my gob, im not having owt done" ? Or is that not the done thing to do? I'm only going really to 'keep on the books' so to speak.

I would be very honest with your dentist - who will have plenty of experience dealing with nervous patients.
My dentist is superb - when I started going to him, he realised how bad my phobia was because when he leaned over to look in my mouth, i would pass out!
He prescribed me some valium tablets which helped completely. In addition, he did everything very slowly, and only spoke to me when he aboslutely had to - none this 'Now I'm going to ...' which wouldhave freaked me out totally.
Tell your dentist how frightened you are, and that you would like him to proceed slowly, with no dialogie unless essential, and could he prescribe some tranquilisers for you to help you.
i got past my phobia, and now go regularly - it can be done, hang in there.

I don't think age has anything to do with it Boo.
Phobias, by definition, defy rational explanation, so the 'well-meaning' comments like "Modern dentists don't hurt ..." and all that are meaningless. I was so bad, I couldn;t get through the front door of his building, never mind past reception, up the stairs, into the surgery, and into the chair ... without medication, so i sympathise totally.
i think if you spell it out from day one - including your presecription from your previous dentist, it will help him to help you. Good luck. I am off there myself today at 11:50 to have an abscess treated - let's compare notes after dinner.

Sqad - i think your being a little unkind here.
Boo is sharing her very real fear and anxiety about dentists - and that is a million miles away from 'not liking' the dentist.
I am off on holiday on Friday - i adore flying, so look forward to it, but i would bever be dismissive of people who are frightened - it's not helpful.
It's Valentine's Day - be nice!!
Boo - catch you after tea.
