changing my daughters name

bit of an awkward one really split up from my daughters father about 3 months back we were not married and she took on his surname i want to change it back to mine as he does not deserve to have her are there any ways around doing it??????

Me and the father of my kids aren't married but they have his surname, when i went to register my first child the woman registra tryed to convince me for my child to have my surname.Apparently if the child had my surname it can always be changed if we decided to get married etc  but if the child takes fathers surname it can never be changed, so the answers proberly no sorry, but do what shehin says try seeing a solicitor about it

If your not married she should be able to change her name, without the fathers permission she has to wait till she is 18 i think im not sure, i would get in touch with the citizens advice bureau they are very helpful and have a website,

Hi.  I recently changed my son`s surname to mine.  Pick up the Birth certificate and go to a solictors...You need to get a Change Of Name Deed.  It will cost you some money, but under �50.  It`s very simple to do and the solicitors will give you copies of The Change Of Name Deed for you to keep, and they will keep the original copy.  As you are not married you wont need your daughter`s father`s permission to change her name to yours.  Good luck.

You can do it by deed poll on any of the deedpoll sites on the net, (like I did) and it cost round about �25.  (run a google search... I used deedpoll uk, if I remember!

They'll send you the paperwork...and certificate.

Once you have this certificate, if you enclose it with a passport application for eg, they will use it as proof that her name has been changed.

You then need to inform all the agencies that have her registered, GP, School, Dentist etc, and ask them to send you an acknowledgement... so you know they've changed their records accordingly. 

As you weren't married, you don't need to ask permission.

 

Alternatively, you can drop by the registry office where her birth was registered and speak to someone there, and they can do it for you.

my half-brother & sister now have their mums surname (after she split from my dad) she just informed the school and doctor and stuff, they have now had their names for years. I dont think she did any thing officially but you can call yourself (and your kids) by any name you like as long as you dont intend to defraud anyone by deception ie pretending to be someone you're not. Hope that makes sense

mycatis is right, you can basically call yourself anything you like as long as you're not trying to defraud anyone. For official purposes - birth certificates, passports and so on - you need to take official steps but for day-to-day living, just tell everyone she's now to be Mary Lewis instead of Mary Jones; given that's your own surname, it shouldn't cause any problems for anyone.

Hi...i bring good news.

My friend named her little girl (8 years ago) after the father but he left 3 months later after the baby was born.  I know for a fact that she changed her baby's surname to be the same as hers.  I'm sure you can change the name.
