I have decided after thinking about it for a long time that i would like to develop my family tree.  Has anyone else sucesfully managed this.  Is there software i can buy, or somewhere on-line that will help me get the layout right.  I am quite willing to do the grafting myself to find out the information, but am keen to getting it looking right!

There are numerous sites, but try www.Ancestry.com for a beginning.  Some of the sites are fee for service, while others, such as www.rootsweb.com are free.  Most of the sites I sue are primarily U.S. based for information, but they usuall have U.K. divisions... Best of Luck!

I really appreciate that Clanad
also on friends reunited theres a genes reunited section too.

There is lots of software available, some free and some you can buy.

Family Tree Maker is excellent, I think it costs around 30.  There is also Legacy, that is also good and you can download the standard version for free at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/

The LDS site also has a free download to help you keep your family tree in order.  I haven't tried this one but I know lots of people swear by it.  You can download it

Here

www.ancestry.co.uk are doing some free searches of certain census records at the moment.
why didn't my answer come out as a link, I did what I normally do :(

Hi Buttons

I am from the old school of Family History research and taught it in adult education for 5 years.  If you get bogged down with anything let me know and I will try to help, the on line research is fabulous but can sometimes be inaccurate at a personal level, because you are lulled into thinking there cannot possibly be more than one person with that name in that place at that time, trust me, there most certainly can.  My own research coverered a vast array of records looked at many years prior to electronic research, and my earliest direct ancestor came from Ireland to Chester, England in 1430 to make and sell shoes in Chester City.

Hooray, at last something i can sound clever about on CB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
